Proposed South Dekalb Cities Agree on Boundaries and Submit Maps to State

THE PROPOSED CITIES OF SOUTH DEKALB AND STONECREST SUBMIT THEIR MAPS BY NOVEMBER 15 DEADLINE

Decatur, GA.   Dr. Kathryn Rice and Mr. Jason Lary, signatories for the proposed cities of South DeKalb and Stonecrest in DeKalb County submitted their signed maps yesterday,
November 17, 2014 to the office of Representative Amy Carter, Chair of the GA State House Governmental Affairs committee.  As per the instructions of Representative Mike Jacobs at the August 28, 2014 meeting attended by representatives from the five proposed cities, the two proposed cities of South DeKalb and Stonecrest agreed upon boundaries and submitted their maps to Representative Jacobs on October 16, 2014 and to Representative Carter yesterday.

If approved, the city of South DeKalb will represent a historic step in DeKalb county’s history.  The population of South DeKalb (294,398) will render it the second largest city in the state of Georgia.  If South DeKalb is approved along with Stonecrest (population of approximately 50,000) and the three cities in the north, it would essentially mark the municipalization of DeKalb County.

  1. How is it that you submitted these maps without consulting the residents of the proposed areas? Have you considered that a bulk of the residents do not align with your cityhood wishes? How is it that you are representing South DeKalb? How were you vested that authority?

  3. I completely agree with Sarah and Maria! No referendum was submitted to concerned residents and citizens of concerned areas of DeKalb County during our very recent last election. Very little information has been made public about these plans, and it is undemocratic, to say the very least, to have cityhood proclaimed without a majority decision by the people living in all of the neighborhoods involved. I, for one, do not want my neighborhood (Belvedere Park) to be included in the City of South DeKalb.

  4. I agree! No one was even aware of this taking place until too late. I want out of that proposal.

  5. Hi Thomas,
It takes many steps to form a city and that it would involve community meetings and legislative action. Please be assured that this has not been finalized, nothing has been approved. You will have an opportunity to vote on whether you want cityhood or not for your area. Thanks and have a great holiday.
